MOUNT PLEASANT A crowd of more than 2,000 fans, including 500 students from Mount Pleasant area schools, welcomed the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan into Rose Arena Monday afternoon.
Five playersJustin Verlander, Marcus Thames, Macay McBride, Bobby Seay, Jacque Jonesand members of the Tigers’ coaching staff and support staff attended the event and spoke to the crowd on topics ranging from the upcoming 2008 season, the team’s offseason personnel moves and Verlander’s no-hitter against Milwaukee during the 2007 campaign.
CMU director of athletics Dave Heeke, softball coach Margo Jonker, baseball coach Steve Jaksa and State Rep. Bill Caul (Mount Pleasant) also addressed the crowd.
Along with the appearance by the Tigers, fans at the event had the opportunity to get autographs from CMU student-athletes and coaches as well as take photos with the CMU football team’s Mid-American Conference championship and Motor City Bowl trophies. Highlight videos featuring both the Tigers and 2007 MAC champion CMU football team were also featured as part of the event.
Kent Bergstrom of 95.3 WCFX-FM and Dan Dickerson, radio play-by-play voice of the Tigers, served as the masters of ceremonies for the program.
