CMU Claims Inaugural MAC FAR Academic Achievement Award

MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University’s varsity women’s athletics programs have earned the Mid-American Conference’s inaugural Faculty Athletics Representative Academic Achievement Award.

The FAR Academic Achievement Awards, modeled after the conference’s Reese and Jacoby all-sports awards, will be presented to the women’s and men’s programs with the highest grade-point average ranking in the conference.

CMU’s women’s programs earned a total of 8.3125 points for the 2007-08 academic year. The Chippewas’ soccer program posted the highest GPA in the MAC, while the cross country team tied for the first.

“We take great pride in the academic success of our student-athletes at Central Michigan University,” said Director of Athletics Dave Heeke. “Our student-athletes, coaches and Athletic Academic Services staff are to be commended for continuing the tradition of academic excellence that has been established on our campus. This honor is symbolic of all of their efforts.”

CMU’s soccer program has led the country in cumulative GPA each of the last four years. During the current academic year, the Chippewas’ field hockey program has been ranked fifth nationally in team GPA and the women’s cross country program has been ranked 16th.

The MAC also announced a change to the Institutional Academic Achievement Award, an award CMU had won 10 of the past 11 years. The award had been presented to the athletic department with the highest cumulative grade-point average among its student-athletes. Beginning this year, the award recognizes the institution with the highest student-athlete GPA in the previous academic year.

CMU finished third among the 12 schools in the conference. The university’s 397 student-athletes combined to post a 3.019 GPA during the 2007-08 academic year. Northern Illinois, with a 3.04 GPA among its 380 student-athletes, won the award.

During the 2007-08 academic year, CMU produced 37 Academic All-MAC honorees, 10 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections and two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. A CMU student-athlete earned MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors nine times during the 2007-08 academic year.
