CMU Community Mourns Loss Of James McGuirk

March 30, 2017 MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan University community is mourning the loss of longtime supporter James McGuirk, who died on Tuesday in Rockford.
McGuirk, a Mount Pleasant native, was a major supporter of Central Michigan University and its athletic department.
Most notable was his gift in support of the McGuirk Arena renovation project, which modernized the facility and expanded seating to accommodate 5,300 spectators.
The multi-use arena rates among the very best facilities in the Mid-American Conference, and serves as the home for the Central Michigan men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling teams. It also regularly hosts commencement ceremonies, concerts, student orientation activities, seminars, and other special events throughout the year.
“Jim was a person who really cared about CMU students, and that was a big part of his life and his business,” Associate Vice President/Athletics Director Dave Heeke said. “His donation was transformational. It transformed our campus with the opportunities it has afforded to students. He was incredibly generous and someone who was very aware and concerned about our campus community, and especially the students who are here.”
McGuirk graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1951 and served in the Army in 1953-54. He worked for Dow Chemical in the 1960s in the photography department and was the owner/operator of United Apartments in Mount Pleasant since 1963.
McGuirk’s philanthropic legacy extends beyond CMU.

“Jim was a true friend of CMU and Mount Pleasant and made a positive impact on many of our students. He will be missed,” CMU Vice President for Advancement Bob Martin said.

The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday, April 13, from 3-7 p.m. A celebration of Jim's life is scheduled for Friday, April 14, at Buck's Run Golf Club with the family.
