Chippewa Student-Athletes Are the Class of the MAC

MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University student-athletes rose above the rest of the Mid-American Conference in 2006-07. The Chippewas had a league-high 15 MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week recipients during the recently completed academic year.

Nine men were recognized 11 times with the conference academic honor, with quarterback Dan LeFevour and pitcher Josh Collmenter each being named scholar-athlete of the week on two occasions. Four women earned the weekly award on four occasions.

The Chippewas honored as scholar-athletes starred both on and off the field in 2006-07. LeFevour (Dec. 7 and Jan. 4) was the MAC Freshman of the Year and was the first team All-MAC quarterback after setting CMU passing records for yards (3,031) and touchdowns (26) in a season. Collmenter (April 12 and May 10) was the MAC Pitcher of the Year after going 8-1 with a 0.71 ERA during the conference season.

LeFevour’s teammate on the gridiron, Daniel Bazuin (Oct. 12), was a first team All-MAC selection on the defensive line who was recently drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the NFL Draft. Bazuin was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team following the football season.

Collmenter’s teammate on the diamond, Tyler Stovall (March 15), was the MAC Player of the Year after leading the conference in batting average (.414) during the regular season. The duo joined Jeff Helps (April 19) on the Academic All-MAC team, where a total of four Chippewas were represented, the most of any school in the conference.

Wynn Michalak (Feb. 8) won his third consecutive conference title at 197 pounds on the mat and was named MAC Wrestler of the Year for the second straight season. He was an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for the at-large second team.

Pitcher Ali Pettit (April 19) made the All-Tournament team at the MAC Softball Championships after pitching CMU into the title game without allowing an earned run in her first two starts. She finished the season with a record of 17-7 and a 2.43 ERA, and was named to both the Academic All-MAC team and to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District second team.

Of the 13 athletes that were named as Scholar-Athlete of the Week, 11 were also named to the Academic All-MAC squad for their sport. CMU was the only school to have more than 10 different student-athletes named as Scholar-Athlete of the Week in 2006-07; Eastern Michigan had the second-best total of nine honorees.

The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives. There were 34 weeks in which scholar-athlete winners were announced, with 61 different student-athletes being honored during the 2006-07 academic year.
