CMU Athletics Remembers Dr. Jason Davenport

Jason Davenport
June 23, 2015 Dr. Jason Davenport, who served as the medical director and lead team physician for CMU Athletics since May 2014, passed away this past weekend.

“Words cannot describe what a shocking loss this is and my thoughts and prayers are with Jason’s family,” CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said. “Jason made a tremendous impact on our department during his time here and I will be forever grateful for his contributions.”

Davenport was instrumental in building ties in health care between CMU Athletics and CMU Health-University Health Services on campus. He standardized electronic medical records in athletics so student-athletes’ full record could be seen at UHS, and he made his sports medicine knowledge available to all students and faculty.

Davenport also was involved in building a relationship with MidMichigan Health, which led to CMU hosting a sports medicine workshop in May for athletic trainers.

Davenport, a sports medicine-trained physician who worked with both collegiate and professional athletic teams, came to CMU from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where he served as the team physician for Rockford University, Rock Valley College and as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at University of Illinois at Rockford. He also worked in private practice as a sports medicine physician at Rockford Orthopedic Associates.

Previously, he worked as team physician for the Rockford Riverhawks of minor league baseball, team physician and assistant clinical professor of medicine for Ohio State University athletics, and team physician at Michigan State University. He completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Michigan State University in 2004, completed his family medicine residency at the University of Michigan in 2003 and graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Visitation is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 26 at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home which is located at 1200 W. Wheeler Street in Midland. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 at Mount Olive Baptist Church which is located at 1114 N. 6th Ave., in Saginaw.
