Originally released July 1, 2009.

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University Athletics, in conjunction with the Mount Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, will host the inaugural CMU/Mount Pleasant Gus Macker Festival on Aug. 29-30, 2009.

The traditional Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will have a different feel when it hits the campus of CMU. The sponsors of and committees for the event are dedicated to giving this tournament a true festival feel. Activities and events for the entire family are being planned for the weekend, including:

Taste of Mount Pleasant on Friday and Saturday.
Local music acts and entertainers on Friday night.
Canoe races in Rose Pond throughout the tournament.
    Inflatables for kids.
    Bag toss tournament.
    Three-point contest.
    Dunk contest.
    Free concert Saturday night.
Movies on the stadium video board on Saturday.
    Several other special events.

The Mount Pleasant Gus Macker festival will take place on the campus of CMU in lot 62, which is located in front of the Student Activity Center and immediately north of Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The Macker Tournament is designed so that anyone can play: male or female, young and old, short and tall, the most experienced or no experience at all. This maintains the purity and integrity of the driveway game. Since 1987, the Macker tour has held 972 tournaments with more than 2.2 million players and more than 23 million spectators. In addition to the overall economic impact of bringing thousands of players and fans into the community, the charitable aspect of the Gus Macker Tournament is an important part of each event. At each tournament site, the local organizing committee donates proceeds from their event to a local charity or charities.

The proceeds from the Aug. 29-30 event will be directed to CMU’s Events Center project. The proposed Events Center will transform the university’s existing Rose Center into a first-class complex serving the academic, athletic and community needs of the university and citizens of central and northern Michigan.

This exciting family-fun filled weekend is being made possible through sponsorships with CMU Athletics, the Mount Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the United States Army, the CMU Program Board, Morey Courts, Heritage Automall, Morning Sun, WCFX, University Events and the CM Life.
