Vote for the Winners of the 2010 CHIPYS
MOUNT PLEASANT -- A pair of student-athletes have put together a special event for a special cause, emulating one of the sports world's most popular awards shows.
Central Michigan baseball players Sam Russell and Reid Rooney announced the creation of "The CHIPYS", emulating the popular ESPYS award show on ESPN.
The black tie event will take place in Plachta Auditorium on Sept. 26. Tickets are available for $3 through the Central Box Office or $5 at the door the day of the event, with all the proceeds going to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which is also the beneficiary of the ESPYS.
The event, endorsed by Central Michigan's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is family friendly and open to the public. The red carpet show starts at 7 p.m., with the awards program kicking off at 8 p.m.
"We are very excited about the 2010 CHIPYS," Russell said. "It will be great way to combine celebrating an incredible athletic year and raising as much money as we can for a great cause as a community."
Fellow baseball player Brendan Emmett and Russell will emcee the event.
The project has already had one high-profile endorsement: longtime Jimmy V supporter Dick Vitale contacted the duo and gave his trademark seal of approval with a "Great Idea Baby!" It's also garnered the support of local businesses, with the trophies being donated by JNR Engraving in Mount Pleasant and $100 worth of gift cards have been donated by the CMU Bookstore.
Fans can help select the winners of each of the 12 awards, by voting for their favorite student-athletes, teams and moments via an online survey.
