MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan University has announced naming gifts of major donors to the new Events Center. The Events Center, built adjacent to the existing Rose Center, will open to the public Dec. 1.
The Events Center arena will be named the McGuirk Arena while the basketball court floor will be named Kulhavi Court. In addition, a new practice facility will be named the Dick Parfitt Gymnasium.
The McGuirks have made a commitment of $2.5 million to the project while former Board of Trustees member John Kulhavi has pledged $1 million. A group of donors have pledged $1.5 million to have the gymnasium named after Dick Parfitt, a former CMU basketball player and coach who won three Mid-American Conference championships during his tenure with the university.
To date, more than $7.5 million has been raised for the CMU Events Center project with gifts from nearly 200 donors.
A grand opening event is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 1, followed by a basketball game in which CMU hosts Temple.
