MOUNT PLEASANT - Student-athletes representing Central Michigan University's varsity intercollegiate athletic programs participated in the 2007 Holiday Food Drive on Sunday, Oct. 28.
Student-athletes canvassed the Mount Pleasant community collecting canned and dry goods for the Isabella County Red Cross food pantry from 4-6 p.m. that afternoon. They returned to the Isabella County Red Cross to unload and shelve their collections. Sponsored and organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the annual food drive is one of the largest donations of the year to the food pantry.
Almost 300 student-athletes collected approximately 4,800 food items to assist those less fortunate in the area. The football team collected the most items at 1,118 followed by men’s track and field (725) and women’s track and field (699). Gymnastics took the honor for most items collected by a group, as Gabby Bellisimo, Cheryl Conlin, Andrea De la Garza, Jacquelyn Phillips and Sami Ursch collected 188 food items.
The next community service project will be collecting clothing for the annual drive to assist Christmas Outreach. The student-athletes will be donating clothing during the month of November. The SAAC will also be collecting clothing from the community at Kelly/Shorts Stadium during the first half of the CMU-Eastern Michigan football game on Friday, Nov. 16.
