18 Chippewas Earn 'Distinguished' Recognition

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Eighteen Central Michigan student-athletes were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes by the Mid-American Conference for the fall season.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is an award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics.  

Following each season of the sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 grade point average and who has participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team’s contests was automatically named to Academic All-MAC Team from each sport.

From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the ‘best of the best’ for the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award.


CMU’s 18 are among 210 student-athletes representing MAC institutions to be so honored. Seven of those Chippewas earned Distinguished Scholar Athlete recognition in 2014. They are Nate Ghena, Kaysie Gregory, Christen Chiesa, Kaylin Hoomaian, Jordan Young, Jesse Kroll and Cooper Rush.

Those CMU Distinguished Scholar Athletes are listed below by sport with hometown, year, grade point average and major.

Men’s cross country: Silas DeKalita, Clio, senior, 3.90, law and economics; Ghena, Newport, senior, 3.29, dietetics.

Women’s cross country: Kristin Olling, Wheeler, sophomore, 3.55, dietetics; Kelly Schubert, Free Soil, junior, 3.93, undecided.

Field hockey: Kianne Hinkle, Camden, N.Y., senior, 3.83, integrative public relations; Kaysie Gregory, Rome, N.Y., graduate student, 3.88, science human resources; Sadie Lynn Reynolds, Prospect, Ky., senior, 3.43, child development.

Women’s soccer: Christen Chiesa, Pittsburgh, junior, 4.00, exercise science – kinesiology; Kaylin Hoomaian, Novi, junior, 3.98, exercise science – kinesiology; Kaelyn Korte, Prior Lake, Minn., senior, 3.67, photojournalism; Eliza Van de Kerkhove, Ann Arbor, junior, 3.89, outdoor and environmental recreation; Jordan Young, Lansing, junior, 3.91, biology.

Volleyball: Jordan Bueter, South Bend, Ind., sophomore, 3.28, biochemistry.

Football: Nick Beamish, Riverview, senior, 3.28, sport management; Mark Chapman, Port Huron, sophomore, 3.55, undecided; Jesse Kroll, Algoma, Wis., senior, 3.63, psychology; Jeff Perry, Morris, Ill., sophomore, 3.63, mechanical engineering; Cooper Rush, Charlotte, junior, 3.91, actuarial science.
