Sixteen Chippewas Earn 'Distinguished' Honor

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Sixteen Central Michigan student-athletes were named a Distinguished Scholar Athlete by the Mid-American Conference for the winter, 2016-17 season.

The award goes to student-athletes representing MAC institutions who have excelled both athletically and academically.

In each of the eight winter sports, the league names an Academic All-MAC team. Student-athletes must have achieved a 3.20 grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of his or her team's competitions to earn the honor.

From those academic teams, the faculty athletic representatives from each institution selected a `best of the best' as a Distinguished Scholar Athlete.

The 16 Chippewas to earn the Distinguished Scholar Athlete distinction (with, year, hometown, GPA and major); student-athletes are listed by sport:

• Men's track and field: Luke Anderson, redshirt freshman, Palms, 3.57, economics; Dylan Banagis, senior, Grand Rapids, entrepreneurship, 3.89; Scott Cousino, junior, Clarkston, 3.87, sport management; Silas DeKalita, senior, Clio, 3.69, economics.

• Women's track and field: Michael Bundy, senior, Mount Pleasant, 3.79, physical education; Samantha Cuneo, sophomore, Belmont, 3.88, integrative public relations; Rebekah Petty, junior, Greenville, Pa., 3.86, exercise science; Kelly Schubert, senior, Freesoil, 3.94, exercise science.

• Wrestling: CJ Brucki, junior, Orland Park, Ill., 3.20, accounting; Austin Severn, senior, New Lothrop, 3.57, information systems; Newton Smerchek, junior, Casco, Wis., 3.99, physical education; Mason Smith, redshirt freshman, Clio, 3.37, undecided.

• Women's basketball: Reyna Frost, sophomore, Reese, 3.89, physics-astronomy concentration; Presley Hudson, sophomore, Wayland, 3.77, teacher education.

• Gymanstics: Katy Clements, junior, Gainesville, Ga., 3.47, public relations; Bryttany Kaplan, junior, Parker, Colo., 3.92, commercial recreation.

Banagis and Schubert were named a Distinguished Scholar Athlete for the third consecutive year. Clements, Kaplan, DeKalita, Bundy and Petty were named for the second straight year.
