MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A date with Michigan, a trip to Alaska, and seven weekend home games highlight the Central Michigan men’s basketball team’s 2017-18 nonconference schedule.
The Chippewas’ nonconference portion of their schedule was released today, Monday. The Mid-American Conference slate, along with tipoff times, will be released later.
CMU, which finished 16-16 in 2016-17, opens the season at McGuirk Arena on Friday, Nov. 10, against Siena Heights, one of three in-state schools on the Chippewas’ nonconference docket.
CMU will play at Michigan, which is ranked 23rd in the ESPN preseason poll, on Monday, Nov. 13 at Crisler Arena, and is scheduled to partake in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage over Thanksgiving.
The Wolverines finished 26-12 last season, reaching the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Chippewas’ third in-state opponent is Lawrence Tech, which comes to Mount Pleasant on Dec. 29 for what will be CMU’s final nonleaguer.
“We are excited about the upcoming year and the opportunities our fans will get to see the team from the start of the basketball season,” said Keno Davis, who is entering his sixth season in charge of the Chippewa program.
The Chippewas will feature a solid mix of newcomers and veterans, led by the core of Josh Kozinski, Luke Meyer, DaRohn Scott and Cecil Williams.
Also scheduled to partake in the Great Alaska Shootout are Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, College of Charleston, Idaho, Sam Houston State and Santa Clara.
CMU will also play at home against Eureka (Ill.) College on Saturday, Nov. 18; against Jackson State on Friday, Dec. 1; against Montana State on Tuesday, Dec. 5; against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Dec. 9; Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday, Dec. 22.
The Montana State game is a rematch of one of CMU’s most entertaining games of the 2016-17 season, when the Chippewas won, 106-103. Montana State is headlined by Tyler Hall, who ranked seventh in the nation last season in scoring at 23.1 points per game.
The Chippewas will play at Southern Utah on Saturday, Dec. 16; and at Missouri-Kansas City on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
