KENT, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Central Michigan wrestling team dropped its final Mid-American Conference dual of the season on Sunday when it fell to Kent State, 21-13, at the Golden Flashes’ M.A.C. Center.

The Chippewas won just four matches, and scored bonus points in just one of them in falling to 8-5 and finishing 5-2 in MAC duals. Kent State improved to 12-9, 2-4.

GOOD START
The meet started at 184 pounds and Jordan Ellingwood gave the Chippewas a 3-0 lead with a 10-3 victory.

KEY SWING
A critical turn came early in the meet when Kent State’s Kyle Conel defeated Jordan Atienza, 6-4, at 197 pounds, and then senior Stephen Suglio pinned CMU redshirt freshman Matt Stencel at 285, giving the Golden Flashes a 9-3 lead.

GOING WITH YOUTH
Kent State led the meet, 12-6, after the 133-pound match. CMU coach Tom Borrelli sat starters Mason Smith (141) and Justin Oliver (149) in favor of a freshman and a redshirt freshman.

The redshirt freshman, Reilly Brown, dropped a 7-5 decision at 141, while the freshman, Nolan Saxton, fell 3-1 at 149. Both matches went to overtime.

AN UPSET
CMU senior Colin Heffernan dropped an 8-6 decision to junior Casey Sparkmand at 157. Heffernan, who finished runner-up in the MAC Championships last season, is ranked 14th nationally by InterMat.com. Sparkman, who was third in the MAC a year ago, is unranked.

Sparkman’s win clinched the dual for the Golden Flashes.

IMPRESSIVE WIN
CMU sophomore 165-pounder Logan Parks recorded his fourth major decision of the season when he defeated junior Isaac Bast, 12-3. Last season, Parks finished sixth and Bast was fifth at the MAC Championships.
