Five Chippewa Wrestlers Earn Academic Honors

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Five Central Michigan student-athletes have been named to the 2017 Academic All-Mid-American Conference wrestling team.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 or better grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of his team's meets or tournaments. True freshmen and first-year transfers are ineligible.

The five Chippewas named to the squad, with year, hometown, GPA and major.

CJ Brucki, junior, Orland Park, Ill., 3.20, accounting.

Corey Keener, senior, Schuylkill Haven, Pa., 3.28, physical education.

Austin Severn, senior, New Lothrop, Mich., 3.57, information systems.

Newton Smerchek, junior, Casco, Wis., 3.99, physical education.

Mason Smith, redshirt freshman, Clio, Mich., 3.73, undecided.

It marked the third consecutive season that Smerchek has made the squad, and the second time that both Keener and Severn have earned league academic honors.
