By the time Louisville visits McGuirk Arena on Dec. 20 near the end of the nonconference schedule for the Central Michigan women’s basketball team, the Chippewas should be ready to take on a team that reached the Final Four last season.
The Chippewas play host to South Dakota State on Nov. 12, and the Jackrabbits went 26-7 last season and reached the NCAA Tournament. Five days later, Western Kentucky visits, and the Hilltoppers were 24-9 in 2017-18 and reached the NCAA Tournament.
“Everything gets us ready for the Mid-American Conference, which is going to be even tougher this year,” CMU coach Sue Guevara said. “Everything gets us ready for the month of March.”
CMU travels to Quinnipiac on Dec. 2, and the Bobcats beat the Chippewas in McGuirk Arena last season, finished 28-6 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Chippewas open with a four-game home stretch that begins on Nov. 8 against Oakland. They will play in the University of Virginia Tournament Nov. 24-25 and the Miami Tournament on Dec. 29-30. The MAC schedule will be announced at a later date.
CMU is coming off a program-best 30-victory season that did not end until the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. The tournament run included victories against ranked LSU and Ohio State teams. The Chippewas won the regular-season MAC title and the MAC Tournament title and were ranked No. 20 in the final USA Today’s coaches poll, the highest finish in program history.
