RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Central Michigan shot a 334 team total on Friday in the opening round of the 54-hole Rio Verde Invitational on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde Country Club.
The Chippewas stand in 19th place in the 19-team event, which is hosted by Western Michigan. CMU is at 46-over par, 12 shots behind 18th-place Ohio.
Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) posted a 7-over 295 for a five-shot lead over Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan, both of which totaled 300 on Friday.
The second round of the tournament is scheduled for Saturday with the final round on Sunday.
Junior Natalie Johnson shot a 7-over 79 to lead the Chippewas. She is among a group tied for 50th in the 103-player field.
Also for the Chippewas, Kristen Wolfe and Danielle Sawyer both shot 83, Bria Colosky shot 89, and Holly Hines posted a 90.

Chandler Gallagher of UMKC shot a 3-under 69 for a one-shot lead over two players from Northern Arizona, Sofia Anokhina and Sierra Bezdicek.
