MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women’s golf team will open the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 19-20, at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind.
The Cardinal Classic kicks off CMU’s five-tournament fall schedule, which concludes with the Mid-American Conference Fall Preview at Silver Lake Country Club in Kent, Ohio.
Silver Lake is also slated to host the MAC Championship April 21-23, 2017. That tournament comes at the end of CMU’s six-event spring slate that includes trips to Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and Georgia.
The Chippewas’ fall schedule includes several events in which they have played in past seasons, including the Cardinal Classic, the Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational, and the Rocket Classic, which is hosted by Toledo.
“I think it’s good to have some consistency,” CMU coach Cheryl Stacy said. “(The players) can see how they mature from one year to the next and they should have a better knowledge of the course and of their games. I also think it’s good to mix in a few new ones.”
The fall slate includes another in-state event, the Western Michigan-hosted Kzoo Classic at The Moors Golf Club in Portage.
The spring schedule begins with the Women’s Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The Chippewas are scheduled to partake in tournaments every other weekend leading up to the MAC Championship. In 2016, CMU crammed four spring events into a 22-day span.
“I think the way it’s spread out is better this year,” Stacy said. “It will give the student-athletes a little time to rest between events, get caught up on their studies.
“Ideally a tournament every couple of weeks is much better for the student-athletes’ welfare and it gives them a chance to be at their best and compete at the highest level.”
