Chippewas Head to MSU for Fossum Invitational

By Kevin Meyer, - EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Central Michigan women’s golf team heads to East Lansing this weekend for the 31st annual Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State.

The Chippewas will join 15 other teams on MSU’s Forest Akers West, which plays to par 72 over 6,236 yards.

It’s the second tournament in as many weeks for the Chippewas, who placed 15th of 16 teams last weekend in the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State.

CMU is in its first season of women’s varsity golf since 1982. The team comprises six freshmen, one junior and one senior.

Arielle Roberts led CMU last weekend in the 54-hole Redbird, shooting 237 to tie for 43rd in the 93-player field. Roberts shot 76 in Monday’s final round to tie for the second-best 18-hole total in school history.

CMU’s 973 team total last weekend is the lowest 54-hole score in school history.

Joining the Chippewas and host Spartans at the Fossum are East Tennessee State, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Florida International, Grand Valley State, Houston, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oakland, Toledo and Western Michigan.

The 54-hole event will be contested on Saturday (36 holes) and Sunday (18).
