NORMAL, Ill. -- The Central Michigan gymnastics team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a nonconference victory at Illinois State on Friday.
The Chippewas posted a 194.525 score in improving to 5-1. Illinois State (1-3) finished at 192.025. It was CMU’s second victory of the season over the Redbirds.
Bryttany Kaplan and Katy Clements each won two events to pace CMU. Kaplan captured the vault and the uneven bars, while Clements was first on the floor exercise and the balance beam.
CMU sophomore Denelle Pedrick won the all-around with 39.000.
CMU’s Bryttany Kaplan tied her career-high in winning the vault with a 9.800. Pedrick was second (9.775). The Chippewas posted a 48.725 team score in the event to Illinois State’s 47.550.
Kaplan was first with a 9.800, while teammates Hayley Porter, Kailey Miller and Gianna Plaksa tied for second with a 9.750. CMU recorded a 48.725 score in the event to better the Redbirds’ 48.200.
Clements posted a 9.875 on the floor to place first. CMU’s Abbie Rose Zoeller tied for second at 9.825. CMU’s team score was 48.950. Illinois State finished at 48.500
Clements, a senior, tied her career high in the event with a winning score of 9.925. Pedrick was second at 9.800. Porter tied for third at 9.725. CMU totaled 48.125 to Illinois State’s 47.775.
The Chippewas will return to Mid-American Conference action on Feb. 18 (1 p.m.) at home against Kent State. It will be CMU’s first league meet since Jan. 28 when it won at Northern Illinois. The Chippewas are 3-0 in MAC duals.
