MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan soccer coach Peter McGahey announced the addition of eight student-athletes to his program on Wednesday.
Seven of the players are high school seniors who will be freshmen in 2018. The eighth player is Amanda Britain, a Michigan native who is transferring from Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md. Britain’s sister, Morgan, is a CMU redshirt freshman goalkeeper.
Amanda Britain, who hails from Wolverine Lake and prepped at Walled Lake Central High School, is a forward who started 16 of 18 games, finishing with a goal and an assist, in 2017 for Mount St. Mary’s.
“Amanda is a player that we were very interested in in the recruiting process and we’re just very happy that she wanted to be closer to home and that she chose to join the Chippewa soccer family,” said McGahey, who is in his sixth season in charge of the program. “She comes in as an experienced player; we’re certainly looking forward to her competitiveness, her experience, and to her making an immediate impact.”
Of the seven freshmen-to-be who will arrive for the 2018 season, two hail from Michigan, two are from Illinois, two are from Ontario, and one is from Wisconsin.
The new Chippewas are midfielder Katie Coleman of Canton; defender Kennedy Thurlow of Livonia; defender Ciara Coneset of Plainfield, Ill.; forward Alex Hébert of St. Catherines, Ont.; forward Olivia May of Elkhorn, Wis.; forward Abbi Morrell of Guelph, Ont.; and midfielder Chesney Wargo of Aurora, Ill.
“We’re excited to add this group of student-athletes to the Chippewa soccer family,” McGahey said. “They represent successful athletes on the field, successful students in the classroom, and most importantly, they’re people of high character – three pillars of our program.
“They fit our Identity soccer-wise and we’re adding some impact potential. You have some very driven, motivated students and they all have experienced success, they all come from successful clubs, success high school programs.”
