MACON, Ga. -- The Central Michigan softball team split its first two games of the season on Friday at the Mercer Invitational.
The Chippewas started the day with a 4-1 loss to Morehead State, and then topped Appalachian State, 12-6, in the nightcap.
Erika Underwood blasted a three-run homer in the first inning and then ripped another three-run round-tripper to highlight a six-run third to lead the Chippewas against Appalachian State (0-2).

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Samantha Howell made in her first collegiate start and earned the win against Appalachian State. Laura Vaccaro and Cloe Mallory each pitched in relief. They combined to allow five hits, strike out two and walk eight.
CMU backed its pitching trio with 14 hits against Appalachian State. Allison Curtis, Underwood, Morgan Gardner, Rachel Vieira and Vaccaro had two hits each to lead the Chippewas at the plate.
Hanna Warren started and went three innings in taking the loss against Morehead State. She struck out three. Taylor Weaver went the final four innings. The pair combined to strike out three, walk three and surrender four hits.
Curtis and Lacy Tolfree had two hits each to lead CMU at the plate.
CMU is scheduled to face Mercer (4:15 p.m.) and Morehead State (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday and finish the invitational with a game against Appalachian State on Sunday (11 a.m.).
