MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan volleyball coach Mike Gawlik announced on Friday the addition of two signees to the Chippewas' Class of 2017.
Kalina Smith, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter/setter from Powell, Wyo., and Hannah Warners, a 5-8 libero/defensive specialist from Grand Rapids, will join the program for the 2017 season.
Smith and Warners will join three players - Grace Butler of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., Lyza Myers of Napoleon, and Miani Bolden of Homewood, Ill. - who signed in November.
Warners helped lead Grand Rapids Christian to a Class A state semifinal appearance in 2015, and earned the team Most Valuable Player Award in 2016, along with All-Ottawa-Kent Conference Gold Division honors. She also lettered in soccer.
"Hannah Warners has a smooth and seamless style to her play," Gawlik said. "She is a fierce competitor, but also has a calm and soft touch on the ball that comes from her years of experience. We are excited to have her join our talented back court and are looking forward to see what she'll do in Maroon and Gold."
Smith, who is set to graduate from Campbell (Wyo.) County High School this spring, was named the Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year in both volleyball and basketball during her senior year. She also earned All-America honors from PrepVolleyball.com and was a member of two track & field relay teams - the 4x100 and the 4x400 -- that won Wyoming state titles in 2016.
"Kalina Smith is a dynamic athlete that has excelled both on the volleyball and basketball courts, and on the track," Gawlik said. "She's a high flyer with a great arm. One of the things that drew us to her was her contagious smile. Kalina is the daughter of a volleyball coach and practically grew up in the gym."
